In 2022, a bakery moved into a historic building on Sixth Avenue in downtown Medicine Hat, and it’s already looking to expand.
King Bagel owners, Addison Mohns, Christien Ellis, and Tye Komistek bake fresh bagels from scratch and mix many different flavours of home-made cream cheese daily, and the Medicine Hat community can’t get enough.
Before opening their doors, the three needed extensive renovations to the building. They wanted to expose the aged brick and wooden floors, along with building a functional kitchen and removing some walls.
“We received the Beautification Loan, and it covered some costs from restoring the building. This was helpful as new business owners. It really made a huge difference, and it’s nice that Community Futures is trying to help with revitalizing the downtown,” says Ellis.
The trio recently opened King Bagel during the summer Art Walk event. They’re already in the process of opening a new location, but this time it’s a deli shop that will feature meat like, wagyu beef and black angus beef.
King Bagel finds itself in the community, delivering bagel sandwiches to businesses for lunch, providing hot lunches for schools, and often selling out of their bagels on Saturday mornings. They also offer catering and wholesale.
With continuing the rush of the bagel business, they look forward to opening the doors to their deli shop in spring 2023.
