Medicine Hat welcomes a new pet store on North Railway

Two entrepreneur’s dreams became a reality seven months ago, when Strange Exotics opened in Medicine Hat.

Ky-ra and Rob Strange designed a shop that included something for everyone, from child-height display tanks to breathtaking vivariums, along with informational pamphlets to educate people on the proper care for each animal.

The newfound business owners have been vending reptile expos for the last 10 years. While Ky-ra has worked at various pet stores and vet clinics within Medicine Hat, she has accumulated over 15 years of experience in the pet industry.

Less than a year ago, she and her husband, Rob, opened their new business on North Railway to pursue their dreams.

I always had pets growing up, and my grandma had iguanas. This all started when I was little,” says Ky-ra. “The business is very family oriented. It’s really unique, and we want our passion to help people find their perfect pet or continue to build a tank for their current one.

There’s a solid community in Medicine Hat who are ready to support the new pet store owners, who go into Strange Exotics and share their passion with Ky-ra, Rob, and their staff.

We invite people to come in with questions. We can bring animals out to find the best one for them,” says Ky-ra. “We’re always ready to give advice, so people can go home, take care of their pets properly, and build awesome tanks for them.

The different personalities of reptiles, along with creating the ideal environment for their new pet, is what Ky-ra and Rob enjoy most. They’re happy to be sharing and teaching others about the hobby they’re passionate about.

The new business owners reached out to Community Futures Entre-Corp and received the Small Business Loan, which helped them attain the location and bring in some stock.

With the help of family, they’ve been able to stock the store even further, ensuring they have what people need. The store started with reptiles, fresh fish, and saltwater fish, and it’s slowly growing to include dog and cat food. Eventually the owners will be adding more.

We were recommended by a friend who had received support from Community Futures Entre-Corp years ago,” says Ky-ra. “I really like Greg and Darren. They were so awesome to work with. I am very grateful for their support.

For those who are interested in reptiles and want to learn more, Ky-ra encourages people to visit the store and attend reptile expos throughout the year when possible.
